Shannon School of Business

The MBA in Community Economic Development has been offered by the Shannon School of Business at CBU since 1997 and is honoured to have over 1700 alumni worldwide. Our curriculum includes the fundamental business subjects found in traditional MBA programs, with a special focus on applying business and management concepts through the lens of community economic development.

Although there may be countless MBA programs around the globe, Cape Breton University’s MBA is the only one in Canada that includes community economic development at its core. Our MBA is made for people who want to make a difference where they live and work. At CBU, we teach the lessons that inspire students to make a positive change wherever they go.

Program Delivery

The Cape Breton University (CBU) MBA program offers flexible course start dates throughout the year to accommodate your schedule and preferences. With three intakes annually in January, September, and July, you can begin your MBA journey at a time that suits you best.

Our program delivery combines the convenience of online learning with the engagement of on-campus classes. Whether you choose to attend in person or participate remotely through live online sessions, you’ll have access to the same high-quality curriculum delivered by renowned faculty. Explore the various start dates and delivery options to find the perfect fit for your career goals.

The MBA program delivered in July, where 100% of the courses are delivered on campus. For added flexibility, you have the option to attend classes online synchronously through live sessions, from anywhere in Canada.

July Intensives:

While classes in Sydney follow a traditional Fall and Winter semester structure, the CBU MBA is also delivered during the month of July in intensive Monday-Thursday two-week blocks, as well as Friday-Saturday weekends over 2 weekends.

This allows students more flexibility in course planning, including the opportunity to take MBA courses in the month of July to accelerate completion of their MBA degree, or, catch up with courses they may have missed in one of our off-campus venues.

Historically referred to as our “July Residency”, most July courses are now delivered in Dual-mode classrooms, allowing for both in-person and online attendees simultaneously.  That means students who miss courses delivered at our off-campus venues, can take July courses either in-person or online (please note that the class timings are based on the Atlantic time zone, so students taking July courses online need to adjust to any time zone differences).

With all core courses and several electives in the MBA curriculum offered every July, students can also take the entire MBA curriculum over successive July periods, either in-person or online:
