The MBA in Community Economic Development at Cape Breton University is a unique program that focuses on business subjects with a special emphasis on community economic development, leadership, governance, and managing change. The program has been offered by the Shannon School of Business at CBU since 1997 and is the only one of its kind in Canada. It is designed for those who desire to strengthen economic ties and make a difference in their communities.

The CBU MBA program is offered across 6 cities in Canada at Sydney in Nova Scotia, Edmonton in Alberta, Warman in Sasketchewan, Brandon in Manitoba, Kingston and Toronto in Ontario. Offered Online and In-person, MBA in Community Economic Development program allows students to advance their career while working full-time and learning the course on weekends on Full-time or Part-time basis.

Accreditation

CBU is a Canadian public university, established by legislation in the Province of Nova Scotia, and accredited by Nova Scotia’s Department of Education and the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.  It is a fully accredited member of:

    This program is offered with the written authorization of the Minister of Advanced Education effective July 1, 2020. This authorization was provided after the program proposal underwent a quality assurance review and was found to meet the standards established by the Minister. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CBU MBA in CED is delivered both online and in-person format.

Candidates who do not have an undergraduate degree, but have significant work experience may be admitted and receive a GMAT waiver as a non-traditional student. Candidates will be assessed individually in areas such as experience and performance in their professional career. To find out if you may be eligible, email mba@cbu.ca

Students studying On-campus are charged tuition of $1,774.50, plus an $18.48 IT fee for each course. On campus students are also required to pay a $24 Campus Renewal Fee for each course, and a Campus Activity Fee of $41.10 per term.

Students studying off-campus are charged tuition of $2,528.70 plus an $18.48 IT fee for each in-person course, and $1,774.50 for each online course (plus IT fee). Tuition and fees are based on the 2024-2025 academic budget in Canadian funds and are subject to change.

Designed to foster capacities of analysis, critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication, the MBA in CED program equips students with both theoretical foundations and practical skills; the knowledge and tools to function effectively and productively in an increasingly changing global community. There is a significant amount of reading, writing and class discussion within each course. In addition, each student is required to complete an Applied Research Project, the culmination of the degree, which approaches a problem in a holistic, multidisciplinary manner and must meet the highest academic standards.

CBU’s MBA in CED program is accredited by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Committee, the Ontario Ministry of Colleges & Universities, the Campus Alberta Quality Council, and the Saskatchewan Higher Education Quality Assurance Secretariat.
